Answers to the questions we are asked most often about choosing, ordering, installing and maintaining GRP storage tanks. Select a topic to see its questions. Product-specific questions are answered on each product page.
Camplas GRP storage tanks are suitable for a wide range of liquids, including liquid fertiliser, AdBlue, de-icing fluid, potable and process water, and bulk industrial chemicals. Standard tanks, available from stock, are rated for corrosive liquids up to a specific gravity of 1.35. For higher-density or more aggressive products, Camplas engineers tanks to a specific gravity of 2.0, with the tank construction specified for the stored liquid. Refer to the Camplas chemical compatibility chart for individual products, or contact our technical team to confirm suitability.
Yes. Camplas manufactures GRP tanks to customer specification as well as to standard designs. Tank capacity and dimensions can be made to suit the available space, with flanged connections positioned to match the site pipework. Options include ladders, platforms and inspection hatches, and tanks are supplied in any RAL colour. Where the application requires it, Camplas also designs bespoke tanks, including insulated, bunded and double-skinned versions. Please see our Customised Tanks and Bespoke Tanks pages for further details, or contact our technical team to discuss your requirements.
GRP storage tanks do not rust. Unlike a steel tank, a GRP tank needs no protective coating, internal lining or cathodic protection, so there is nothing to maintain or renew over its life. GRP is also around a quarter of the weight of steel, which makes tanks easier and less costly to transport and install, and reduces the load on the base. Camplas GRP tanks are designed for a 25 year service life.
For large capacities and demanding duties, GRP outperforms polyethylene on three measurable criteria.
Whether a storage tank requires a bund depends on the liquid stored, the site and the regulations that apply to it. Secondary containment is commonly required for oil, fuel, liquid fertiliser and bulk chemical storage, and is not normally required for clean water. Camplas supplies tanks for installation within a concrete bund, with a fabricated GRP bund, or as self-bunded tanks with an integral 110% bund, so the appropriate arrangement can be specified for each site.

Yes. Camplas supplies GRP tanks to customers throughout the UK and overseas.
Recent international projects include a 100 cubic metre double-skinned fish silage tank for Mowi in Norway and three 30 cubic metre tanks for Yara at Meary Veg Sewage Treatment Works on the Isle of Man.
GRP tanks are light for their size, which makes them well suited to road and sea transport, and delivery is quoted individually for each destination.

Yes. Camplas can arrange delivery and installation through its specialist installation partner. The tank is delivered to site, erected on the prepared base and bolted down, with flanges fitted on site where specified. Connection of site pipework is carried out by the client’s mechanical contractor, with Camplas providing connection details and technical support. A site survey can also be arranged on request.
The base requirements depend on whether the tank is installed above or below ground. Above-ground tanks are installed on a flat, level concrete base with a smooth float finish, designed by the client’s civil engineer for the ground conditions and the full weight of the tank when filled. Below-ground tanks are installed in a prepared excavation with suitable bedding and backfill. Camplas provides guidance on base preparation for each tank supplied, and our engineers are available to discuss the requirements for your site before installation.
Camplas GRP storage tanks are designed for a 25 year service life, and many Camplas tanks have been in service for considerably longer.
In a study carried out with Kingston University, 20 year old Camplas tanks that had been in continuous liquid fertiliser service were tested alongside new tanks of the same design, and no reduction in tensile strength was found.
This long service life comes from the material itself. GRP does not rust, withstands weathering well, and is resistant to the fertilisers, chemicals and water the tanks are designed to store, so the tank shell does not deteriorate in normal use and usually needs no routine maintenance beyond periodic inspection.
All Camplas tanks are supplied with a warranty; please contact us for details.
